This is where that infamous ‘sex smell’ comes from

One of the slightly less charming consequences of a steamy sex session is the smell that hangs in the room afterwards. You know, a smell of sweat and other body-juices that really begs for a window to be opened arms-wide. Where does this strong luft actually come from and can you do anything about it? LotteLust found out.

No sweat

What does it turn out? That woozy smell you smell is not coming from your sweat at all. It's a mix of vaginal discharge and sperm. Sorry, if a Hüttenkäse sandwich is just in front of you. Because sperm has a high pH and secretions a low one, a chemical reaction occurs. Which creates that special ‘perfume’.

When you have a condom used, you get a completely different smell again. The rubber reacts to sweat in its own unique way in combination with the low pH of the vagien.

Something fishy?

So it is quite normal if you and the room you have sexed in does not smell like Chanel No. 5. If the smell is really unbearable, you should visit your GP. “It could be that your vaginal bacteria are unbalanced, like a vaginal yeast infection. That can cause a very pungent smell,” says Dr Sara Gottfried. Anyway, a must read for every woman: the 5 most frequently asked questions about vaginal discharge.
