Why a beautiful summer party is when you hate sports
I can tell you one thing: I'm a bit fed up with that terrible heat. That extreme heat. Those heatwaves 2.0.
I quite like sun, beach, sea, and summer. I love skirts, dresses, bare brown legs, and rosé from Provence. But living with 38 degrees in the heart of Amsterdam is not exactly a pleasure, I can tell you. Just believe me. I've literally been dripping out of bed for weeks, have more mosquitoes in the house than my cats can catch, and we're all grumpy. Man, cats, neighbor, friends: everyone. Bad sleep, sweating all day long, and having to endure a soaking wet back on that miserable bike. It's just not fun anymore. Summer is nice. Heatwaves are stupid.
Yet I've discovered something that cheers me – and many others like me – up immensely. Namely this. Summer is by far the best excuse you can have if you hate exercising. Of course, there are jokers who jog through Vondelpark with bare chests in 30+ degrees. Of course, there are enthusiasts who do boot camp at 6:00 AM ‘because it's not so warm then'. They go swimming every day because ’that's good for the whole body'. But it doesn't have to be right now. You have the excuse in hand: 'It's summer. I'll go back when it's boring, gray, and chilly outside. Now it's time for terraces.'. Exactly my motto. You'll definitely go back when you have nothing better to do on a Monday night. Now you have so much to do. You have to sail, swim, and go to the beach. You have to get a tan; work hard on that color to look a bit good through the autumn. In that autumn, when we slowly become Dutch pale again, yes, then we'll obediently go back to pilates, body pump, or tennis. Then we'll definitely jog a round. Not right now. No one looks at you weird if you don't go now, because it really is too hot to think about wild sports movements. Everyone understands you. Everyone somewhat agrees with you. You don't have to. There is no social pressure.‘
And that they have air conditioning in every gym in the city, I lovingly ignore.
