Why you want to go to Ghent now
Most people think of a weekend Belgium quickly when they think of Antwerp or Brussels, while in between lies the picturesque town of Ghent that is absolutely worth a visit. The beautiful historic center and the canals running through the city attract a lot of Asian tourists with selfie sticks. But we also couldn't manage to keep the camera in our pocket for more than five minutes: all the pictures you take could easily be on a postcard. And besides a lovely walk through the city, there are plenty of other reasons to book a weekend in Ghent :
- As soon as you walk into the Pillows Grand Hotel Reylof, you immediately feel the history of the building. The interior has recently been renovated and upstairs there are beautiful living rooms where you can enjoy a glass of bubbles or a cocktail by the fireplace. The rooms are spacious and, not unimportantly, have wonderful beds.
- ’In the evening, you actually don't have to leave the building, because restaurant LOF is in the same building and is a gastrobar concept by Ron Blaauw. I am a huge fan of his cuisine and I always order a number of his signature dishes, such as the homemade ice dessert with the most delicious toppings. I won't give too much away, but keep your camera ready when you order this dessert.
- What I enjoy most is wandering around a city and discovering some hidden gems myself. We walked past a beautiful historic building where a sign saying ‘Restaurant’ was hidden. Through a small staircase and a tiny lift, we suddenly found ourselves at boutique hotel 1898 The Post, an old post office that is fantastically decorated with a mix of antiques and modern art. In The Kitchen, you can relax and have a drink or lunch.
- We walked over the Groentenmarkt and our eyes immediately fell on a beautiful stall that was busy with locals. Oyster bar Au Bon Vivant feels almost like an outdoor café where you can taste the most delicious delicacies while enjoying a lovely glass of wine or champagne.
- Cocktail bar Jigger’s is also one of those hidden treasures that you need to be tipped about. Ring the bell in the hope that there is a spot available and enjoy the most unique cocktails.
- Café Labath is a nice place for a good cup of coffee and breakfast. According to insiders, it is one of the best coffee spots in the city.
- The Superette is a bakery slash restaurant slash coffee shop where you would want to stay all day. They serve a delicious brunch and if you like it, you can easily stay for dinner.
