Epic things you didn't know about Netflix

Netflix, I love you, but sometimes I wonder if our relationship is healthy. You feel like pizza. You satisfy me, then I'm full but I keep on munching anyway. The irony. The company that gives us square eyes and pressure sores on one hand, and perfect Sunday afternoons, incredibly delicious series, and binge sessions on the other. The streaming service intrigues me. Time for a big did-you-know-about-Netflix parade.

Netflix is older than Google
Huh? Yes, you didn't see that coming. Google was founded in 1998, Netflix a year earlier, in 1997. Back then not as a streaming service, but as a DVD rental company. For a fixed monthly fee, Netflix provided the movies. A month later, they were picked up and you got new movies. So a kind of subscription.

Oh and, fun fact: the idea for Netflix came about after one of the founders received a fine from the video store
He had to pay 40 dollars for returning the movie Apollo 13 late. Then he thought: there must be a better way.

Netflix employees have unlimited vacation days

Wow. CEO Reed Hastings doesn't like bureaucratic rules, so every employee can take as many vacation days as they want. As long as work doesn't suffer, but Hastings trusts that. Spokesperson Joris Evers in an interview: ‘It’s about freedom and responsibility and treating people like adults.’ Cool.

Netflix has gone through many names
At first, the service was called ‘Replay’, then ‘Directpix’, and after that ‘Luna.’ Eventually, ‘Kibble’ turned out to be the ideal name. Later it was changed to Netflix.

You can customize the subtitles to your liking

Yesss, I should have known that earlier. Through the account settings on the web version, you can simply adjust the color of the subtitles, but also the size and even the font. Everything for the ideal viewing comfort. CHILL.

You can also easily clear your viewing history
Especially handy if you share an account with multiple people and you keep getting those annoying suggestions. Go to ‘My account’, click on ‘Viewing activity’ and click the cross behind the title you want to remove. Prefer to clear all your watched movies and series at once? Scroll down and click ‘Hide all’ at the bottom of the list.

Say, I uh, I'm diving back into Vis a Vis. Totally addicted here, bye.
