Finally: Grease the series is in the works

Olivia Newton John and John Travolta dancing together

Grease is definitely in the top 3 of musicals that have provided sing-alongs for the audience. Fight me if you disagree, because denying it is almost impossible, if you ask me. Honestly, which song from Grease wouldn't do well during a karaoke night? During my Bubbels, Cooldown, and Joop's Party times (yes Amsterdammers, let yourself be heard), there was always a big cheer when the Grease Megamix came on. What am I saying? It still is. You’re the one that I want, shoewapdadadieda. Yes, exactly, yes.

What not many people agree with me on is that I also give the second part of Grease a passing grade. Yes really: there is a Grease 2. With Michelle Pfeiffer. And okay, it doesn't win against the first part, but it's also worth watching. It dates back to 1982. That second part, Grease numero uno a.k.a. The OG came out in 1978, or really a long time ago. But the clue of this slightly too long intro is worth a party: after 41 years (it sounds even longer ago) Grease is coming back. Oh yes, and we have HBO to thank for that. Go Grease Lightning, go go go gogogo.

They are busy with a reboot series. Yes, you read that right: series. Not a single movie, but multiple episodes set at Rydell High. Because that's the name of the high school from Grease and that will also be the title of this new series. John Travolta is by now anything but a T-Bird anymore and Olivia Newton John unfortunately can no longer pass for a high school student who belongs to the Pink Ladies.. New cast then, but the same idea. Tell me more, tell me more. Those suuuhuuummer niiiihiiights (that last note I always try to hit ambitiously but that never quite works out).

Because yes, those songs are coming back too. Who knows, maybe a cover of an original, but I predict a Glee meets Grease concept. The head of HBO calls it a ‘rock ’n roll musical’, which doesn’t sound Glee-like at all (that is anything but rock ’n roll), but that is mainly due to the time it is set in: the 70s. Really back to those summer nights.
