Just about that armpit hair of Famke Louise

Just thinking... How can a magazine stand out? Make a statement. Anna and Monica kissing? Pff, been there, done that, haloohooo. Oh wait, let's ask Famke Louise. And maybe it would be nice if she has a bit of armpit hair on the cover, right? Just stir things up a bit. Is that how it went at the editorial office of LINDA.meiden? ‘Because a bit of fuss can't hurt,’ says Famke. That little smart aleck.

The singer mentions in the song that she finds it incredibly unfair that there are things men can do in the music world that she, as a woman, is judged for. Like showing a bit of your sexuality. The song prominently features the feminist slogan: ‘Girls in power’ written. ‘I believe a woman should do what she wants. If I don't want to shave for a while, I won't. Why can a man have armpit hair, and it's considered disgusting on a woman? It's just hair – nothing more than that,’ says the 20-year-old in the accompanying interview.

Editor-in-chief Yara Michels explains: ‘What's interesting about feminism is that our body is a kind of protest board, and our body hair is a bold way to disregard outdated ideas about what makes a woman beautiful. We can literally show our ideology with our bodies.’

And of course, of course I understand the whole statement being made here. I'm the first to sing along with just about all the girl empowering lyrics from Beyoncé. But what is it with women and feminism in combination with armpit hair? Who decided that a scruffy patch under the armpit is equivalent to ‘look at me being a boss?’ Isn't Famke already going against the grain? A bit of chatting about Sannie, fur collars and Hondas?

Seriously, what's the idea behind it? A woman who shaves her armpits wants to be attractive to men? Capitulates to the patriarchy and is therefore a traitor to her own sex? I see it popping up more and more on Insta, the #armpithairdontcare trend. Really? Shall we all be hairy this summer? Oh god, and what does it actually say about me that I've had the whole thing lasered away? Am I the disgrace of the free female spirit? No Fam, I felt you already. You don't need to pull a Madonna moment for me. Is it finally time to stop with that armpit hair?
