Lifehack: this is how to keep that basil plant alive

Basil plant

Now you can't accuse me of having a green thumb, but there is one plant that I will definitely kill. The basil plant is the unfortunate one. I therefore remove the leaves and mix it into a dish. But now our neighbors have FavorFlav tips to keep the plant alive, take advantage of them.

According to research by NRC, supermarket herbs are grown in such a way that they grow quickly but have a short lifespan. Supermarket herbs are very sensitive to temperature fluctuations and lack of nutrients.

Too close together

Not only that, the little plants are too close together. You don't buy one plant, but a clump of several seedlings that look like a nice healthy bunch. Once they start growing, these seedlings will fight each other for space and will wither due to lack of water, light, and nutrients.

How do you ensure that supermarket basil stays alive?

The solution: replanting. Remove the clump of seedlings from the pot and gently separate the plants at the roots with your fingers until you are left with four smaller clumps. Remove the smallest and weakest plants so you can be sure that the best ones remain.

Then plant each clump in its own pot with new potting soil and enough plant food. Give the new plants enough water, but make sure they don't drown. Basil plants are sensitive, so place them in a sheltered but sunny spot and only water them at the edge of the pot, otherwise they will topple over.

Bet you that your plants are now destined for a longer life? If not, then you might as well get your plants from the garden center from now on. We also have some tips for that.

Eat them up

What could be more fun than eating your own basil plant? For example, make a nice pesto or this herb salad with mushrooms and a poached egg.
