Netflix drops first images of new series The Witcher

With this headline, I certainly have your attention, but to be completely honest, it’s not entirely true. Okay, images from this new series have indeed been released, but unfortunately, they are not moving images... We have to make do with the first photos. Something about not appreciating the small... But if you’re a bit of a fantasy lover, you’re probably already happy with that. It could very well be that The Witcher is a great replacement for Game Of Thrones That’s what the actors themselves think too, as we see a number of familiar faces that have come over from Westeros and Essos.

The lead role of The Witcher will be played by Henry Cavill. A pretty sight for sore eyes, I can tell you. This British actor is mainly known for his role as Clark Kent, also known as Superman. A striking detail in his face is his chin. Yes, sorry, I always notice that immediately in men when they have it. But in any case: he plays Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher. The other two lead roles are played by Anya Chalotra (Wanderlust), who will play Yennefer, and Freya Allan (The War of the Worlds).

And then the story. The Witcher is based on a book series by Andrzej Sapkowski, the first part of which was released in 1994. We Dutch people only found out about this series a bit late, as it was only released in Dutch in 2014. A total of six parts have been released; enough inspiration for a number of seasons, it seems to me. The Witcher himself is the aforementioned Geralt of Rivia, or in Dutch the Hekser; those are monster hunters. By practicing a lot and adapting their bodies, these Witchers can develop supernatural gifts at a young age and with these, they fight against various monsters. I hope for a little dragon here and there.

That a lot of money has been thrown at this project is already clear. Netflix bought the rights to the series in 2017 and now that the first images have been released, all reactions are generally positive. So the CGI effects should be fine too, but we can only say that for sure when we’ve seen that first trailer, right? Enthusiasts who can’t wait have already figured out when it will be released: at Comic Con in San Diego, which takes place in a few weeks. Personally, that whole event doesn’t attract me much, but I will definitely check that trailer for you, of course.

Last but not least: that release date. Yes, there isn’t a specific date yet, but it is clear that it will definitely be this year. It is also clear that it will be in the fall, so I’m betting my money on October. Just enough time to delve into that book series.
