Say hallelujah: The first female James Bond is a fact

james bond new film with female lead lashana lynch

As beautifully sung in the King's song: ‘The day you knew would come.’ Or well, know... More like hope. Because a female James Bond seemed as realistic to me as a male Disney princess. Not going to happen. Well, I was completely wrong about that. Fortunately. First, it was Idris Elba in the running to become James Bond. A Bond of color? The internet was buzzing about it. Now it turns out that the secret agent is indeed of color, but also that 007 is becoming a woman. It was about time: viva la revolution.

The honor goes to Lashana Lynch. I had to Google that name for a moment because I had never heard of her. She was born in England — how else could it be in a James Bond film, and we know her from the movie Brotherhood or the series Bulletproof. But starting next year, she is 007. The name is Bond, James Bond? Certainly not, the name is Bond, Jane Bond. Or Bond, Jamie Bond. So many missed opportunities, because she is ‘just’ called Nomi in Bond 25. I find that a bit of a shame. By the way, Rami Malek a.k.a. Freddie Mercury also has a role in the film.

Okay, the most important thing: the story. Because the whole Bond-007 is different than you think. Nomi makes her appearance at the beginning of the film. M (Judi Dench) utters the words: ‘Come in, 007.’ We expect Bond, but no, in comes Lashana Lynch. Mind. Blown. Hysteria everywhere. No Daniel Craig-ish Bond? Crazy. And this bad ass girl is going to solve various missions as secret agent 007.

But just to be clear; Lynch takes over the role of 007. James Bond is still there, and to my great pleasure, he is still played one more time by Daniel Craig. Maybe it's an age thing (I only realized quite late that James Bond films are just really fun), but he is my favorite Bond. A film with him and a female 007. While Lynch is being called to M's office as the new 007, Bond is lounging in Jamaica. Retired. Well, you’ve earned it, you know. There is now a worthy replacement for 007. But blood runs where it cannot go, and Bond eventually reports back to MI6. I hope as Nomi's sidekick. ‘It’s a popcorn-dropping moment. Bond is still Bond but he’s been replaced as 007.’ That’s what the makers of Bond 25 say, so that sidekick could very well be true.

They are currently busy filming in Italy for Bond 25, which still has no name. The exact story is still a mystery. Here's a fun fact: this 25th film has also been written by a female writer, which has only happened once before in Bond history. Who run the world? Right. Girls.
