The 5 types of game players

playing games on the table

Friday night is for G&T, Saturday night is now for Settlers of Catan. Or the other way around. Accompanied by 30 Seconds, Monopoly or Ticket to Ride, everyone slowly transforms into their inner gamer. Because we all approach the game differently. From the know-it-all who leads the game of Risk like a Björn Kuipers to the casual player who needs to be shaken awake every round. These types of players are present at every game table:

Embarrassingly fanatic

I start with my own spirit-game player. The ”it's just a game-‘saying does not apply to me. I can get quite upset if no one guesses my description of a PlayStation or the Renaissance. And I know: talking louder doesn’t help.

The cheater

Is non-stop busy hiding cards in his sock (his sock indeed) and placing the dice on six. Infuriating.

The know-it-all

These people sleep with the Monopoly rules under their pillow. Disagreements usually arise between the cheater and the know-it-all.

The bad loser

These are the players who shout: ‘but you know all the cards by heart!’ after losing a game of 30 Seconds. Or who slam the dice just a bit too hard against your Monopoly street. Silly.

The casual player

Who has been persuaded under group pressure and is now sitting with an indifferent face playing Ludo. The casual player is characterized by being busy with everything except the game. That really slows things down. Meh.

May the best win.
