The nicest hotspots in Breda that you want to go to

Hotspots Breda

Vacation in your own country, I love it. And that's why I often plan to leave the Randstad a bit more often and visit nice Dutch cities. Which ones have I already checked off? I was in The Hague last weekend, I'm now a big fan of Utrecht, and even the Ibiza of the north (Texel, that is) doesn't fall short for me compared to the Balearics. And then I recently ended up in Breda. And I must say: I was positively surprised. I should mention right away that I wasn't there during carnival, but if there's a demand for hotspots in the Kielegat, let me know. Who knows, I might go carnival-ing for the first time ever next year. You really should do that at least once in your life, right? But anyway, for now, here are the best spots in Breda that you should add to your bucket list.

Petit Bardot

This is a really nice spot to have a glass of wine at the end of the afternoon, with a portion of bitterballen or charcuterie. But they also have oysters, rilette, and sardines on the snack menu. They have a lot of wines by the glass here, which prompted me to have a small (which turned into a slightly larger than planned) tasting. By the way, next door is Brasserie Bardot, where you can go for a fine dining French dinner. With the same delicious wines, by the way.

Bobbi’s Bar

Hasn't been around for long, but is definitely already a hotspot in Breda. The building it's in alone, but also the interior I think is really cool. Open for lunch and dinner, with the latter being my recommendation. A bit of a New York feeling, although I always hate it when people use those kinds of terms. In this case, it really is true. And definitely have a drink at the beautiful bar beforehand.

Eethuys 1533

I actually ended up here purely by chance, after wandering around a bit (and very conveniently not having made a reservation anywhere). They just happened to have a spot available at a high table. So I thought when reading the name that it would be a typical Dutch restaurant and we would be sitting down to stamppot in no time, but I was – fortunately – completely wrong. They serve Asian fusion dishes here, so after the Beef Tataki, Bao’s, Gyoza’s, and oysters, the mister and I rolled back outside. So delicious. Extra delicious because we drank Bintang here. If you prefer wine, check out the Wijnhuys from the same owners, at Kerkplein 3. Also a recommendation.

Yirga

Breakfast or lunch in Breda you do here. Period. Or breakfast during lunch, that can also be done here with their all day breakfast. I'm normally not really into sweet breakfasts, but I really can't resist the waffles and pancakes here. If you're going for lunch, order one of their organic wines with it. It's said to be better for your hangover, but I must admit I still need to test that out. Non-alcoholic is also not a punishment here, because the coffee is really good.

In Kannen en Kruiken

Also a nice spot for breakfast and lunch, and also a place where you can go if you're with kids. If you're there in the (dark) early morning: almost every table has a handy reading lamp, so cute. You also often see people working with their laptops here and don't forget to order a piece of apple pie. With whipped cream, of course.

Tapasbar Plan B

As un-Asian as Eethuys 1533 sounded, Plan B sounds just as un-Spanish. Apparently, they just really like Dutch names here in Breda. But anyway, here you eat delicious tapas and it's also very cozy. And the sangria is top here too. We also arrived without a reservation (note to self and to you: Breda is quite popular, so making a reservation is advisable everywhere), but we were allowed to sit at the bar. Great tapas for a great price and ideal for a cozy evening of dining. The menu is really huge, so our eyes were a bit bigger than our stomachs here too.

Restaurant LOFF

Vegans and vegetarians, this is where you need to go. But even the carnivores among us will have a great evening (or afternoon) here, trust me. It was a bit uncertain whether this spot would still exist, but in April of this year it became clear that they would remain open, and with an expansion: they are now also open for lunch. The potential closure had to do with roadworks. Unfortunately, I know all about that, as everything in Amsterdam seems to be constantly at a standstill. Anyway, the concept here is a bit different than we know: it's a buffet where you pay per hundred grams. Nice and simple, tasty, and thus vegan.

Wolfslaar

Dining with a Michelin star (which this spot in Breda has had since 2005), a great way to end a vacation in your own country. It's a bit out of the center, in an old coach house, in the middle of nature. It won't surprise you that this is also a popular wedding location, I think. Every dish here is truly a work of art. This is really a full evening program, but believe me: you won’t regret it.

A Cup Of Cake

Confession time: I love cupcakes. And cakes. And the sweeter, the better. The more icing, the better. So basically: the unhealthier, the better. Since there's really no way to work off my cravings, I try to keep these sweet attacks a bit moderated. But during a weekend away, I allow myself, and that's how I ended up here. Check out their menu: so much choice. And the interior here is – not surprisingly – also super sweet.

Sowieso

You want to go to Sowieso (ha ha ha), for a quick cup of coffee or a granola bowl. I must honestly say that I haven't tried the food here (yet), but they absolutely have good coffee and fresh smoothies. I found it a nice place in the center to take a break. And judging by the crowd, I was definitely not the only one there.

If you have Breda tips that are missing here: let me know. And if you have a good tip for a next destination in terms of discovering the Netherlands, I would like to know that too. I'm always open to a road trip through the Netherlands, by the way.
