Confession time: I wasn't exactly a fan of the whole vegan hype that has been going on in the Netherlands for a while now. Very prematurely I thought: no meat, no fish, no animal products, that can't be good. But luckily I can also admit when I'm wrong, so here it is: I was wrong. Not so wrong that I could be fully vegan, but I really don't mind eating vegan every now and then. Well, going out to eat vegan. I can't actually prepare anything. Heel voorbarig dacht ik: geen vlees, geen vis, geen dierlijke producten, dat zal wel niks zijn. Maar gelukkig kan ik ook best m’n ongelijk toegeven, dus bij dezen: ik zat fout. Niet zó fout dat ik volledig vegan zou kunnen zijn, maar ik vind het echt geen probleem meer om af en toe vegan te eten. Nou ja, om vegan uít eten te gaan. Ik kan zelf namelijk precies niks originally vegan myself, so for now I'll stick to visiting vegan hotspots and that's also quite a fun hobby. By now you see them popping up more and more often and that's why it was high time for a list.

Locations in Amsterdam and Rotterdam
For me, this was the first introduction to really delicious vegan food. Healthy, maybe not so much, but genuinely tasty. Those burgers, in my opinion, are just as good as one with ‘real’ meat, and that's definitely an achievement. And even better: I find the bitterballen here tastier than the standard bitterball. Ooh, and that kapsalon here... Yes, I'm a fan.

Nice breakfast and lunch spot in The Hague with a gigantic extensive menu. And yes, everything is vegan. From tempeh bacon, chocolate chip & vanilla pancakes (so good) to quesadillas. No idea how they do it, but everything tastes so good here.

CAB-Rondom 90, Utrecht
Well, going out to eat I almost always associate with a glass of wine or a (special) beer, so this concept is a concept close to my heart. The name says it all: they brew their own beer here, so beer it is with your vegan dinner. As for food, they change the menu every month, with everything being vegan and organic. It's impressive that they can come up with an exciting menu every time, with good and especially tasty dishes.

100% organic and both vegetarian and vegan options. Ideal vegan spot in Breda for a quick lunch; you serve your own food at the buffet. They are also open in the evening by the way. Handy: each dish has a card with all the ingredients, so you know exactly what you're serving yourself.

Exactly how I first thought about vegan food: rabbit food. So already a plus point for their self-deprecation. And they serve anything but rabbit food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They have small dishes to share, and definitely start with one of the snacks.

From the same creators as DopHert (in the Spaarndammerbuurt, Amsterdam — also a vegan recommendation), very instagrammable and also very tasty. Burgers or salads and lots of kinds of delicious (and very filling) milkshakes. The interior resembles an American diner and is super sweet pink. Love it.

So much. Delicious. Pastries. The bakery in Rotterdam is my favorite tip, where they serve an all-day breakfast and make all their pastries, but by now it has become quite a large ‘brand’ with points of sale all over the Netherlands. From Amsterdam to Oisterwijk and everything in between; definitely check the website.

The lunch spot you want to be in Groningen. They call themselves an ‘organic vegan salad bar’, but there's much more than salads available. Burgers, wraps, and pancakes are also on the menu, and desserts (or pastries in between) are also considered. Healthy lunch and super tasty.

Pizza is life. I honestly couldn't live without pizza. Margherita, quattro formaggio, tartufo: I want it all. And pizza is probably not the dish you think of when going for a vegan dinner, but really: try these pizzas. This vegan cheese is super tasty and that says something, since it almost never goes well. Hello, they even have a vegan cheese platter. I love this vegan hotspot.

100% vegetarian and partly vegan: so check the menu carefully. Every month the kitchen comes up with eight dishes and two desserts, so you won't get bored of the food here quickly. Living room vibe including a bookshelf and chill sofa, with a front garden; totally fine. Even if you need to work somewhere, you can sit here undisturbed with your laptop at the long table.
