5 scientific reasons why a hangover lasts longer than one day

Parties can be celebrated perfectly at home, it turns out, in this strange corona time. And for a little thirst for wine, you really don't need a crowded pub.
Of course not. Drinking on your couch is also quite cozy. Enjoying Zoom with your colleagues at the Friday afternoon drinks, having a little chat with your bestie with a glass of vino in your hand, or just sitting in your garden or on your balcony with a summer white beer. Or planning a drink with your lover, that works too. Enjoying together and then diving into bed, because, well, why not? You have all the time. This way, weekends pass by pleasantly lazy and drunk. Wine does soften the pain somewhat and makes you forget those boring weeks a bit. And so there is yet another new word that belongs to the corona crisis : the quarantine hangover.
But one hangover is not the other hangover. Sometimes you feel fine and fit, sometimes you're in trouble for three days. The scientific reasons why your hangover lasts longer than one day:
- You didn't drink enough water. Not just between the wines and beers, but also before you started drinking.
- You didn't sleep enough after those wines. This applies to all mothers and fathers in the story of the wines at home. I understand you. It's. Not. Possible. To. Do. At. Six. O'clock. In the morning.
- You mixed too many drinks and especially dark drinks: red wine, whiskey, rum.
- You're no longer 18: at 18, your body is physically best able to process alcohol, it turns out. Your cells age and therefore your body can break down the toxic substances of alcohol less effectively. In short: your age is not on your side.
- You're not moving enough in quarantine. A study published in The British Journal of Sports Medicine showed that people who spend two and a half hours a week on sports experienced fewer harmful effects of alcohol than those who didn't. Well, it's not fun, but you should still take that long walk today.
So especially indulge in your quarantine wine, but take it easy. Tomorrow is another day at home, right? And the day after tomorrow...
