#blacklivesmatter: 9 important series, documentaries, and films to watch

You can't have missed it: the death of George Floyd on May 25 has sparked a lot worldwide. Hollywood stars are speaking out, people are taking to the streets all over America (. Cole Sprousewas arrested during a protest) and people also gathered en masse at Dam Square in Amsterdam. I am a big advocate of #educateyourself, especially in this situation. Understanding the problem. The media is currently focused on the protests and riots, but these documentaries, series, and films show where it all comes from. How prevalent racism still is, in America, but also in the Netherlands.
I think it needs no introduction. So well made, terribly frustrating and incomprehensible to see. Good that justice has finally been served, but serious that this series was needed for that.
1. When They See Us
2. White is also a color.
Documentary by Sunny Bergman in which she investigates why white people feel aggrieved when it comes to racism and 'white privilege'.
3. The Hate U Give.
Film based on the book of the same name. The story revolves around sixteen-year-old Starr Carter, who witnesses the murder of her best friend who is shot dead by the police.
4. American Skin.
Film with a somewhat similar plot to The Hate U Give: a man witnesses the senseless murder of his son, the police officer in question is acquitted, after which the main character Lincoln Jefferson does everything he can to get justice.
5. BlacKkKlansman.
Based on the autobiography of Ron Stallworth, an African American police officer who successfully played a double agent in the Ku Klux Klan.
6. Sorry To Bother You.
A man of color works as a telemarketer and notices that when he uses his 'white voice', he has more success.
7. Get Out.
An exciting film with an important underlying message.
8. Blindspotting.
Collin is on probation, which ends in three days. He works with his best friend as a mover, but that friendship comes under quite a bit of strain due to their different backgrounds.
Orange Is the New Black.
9. Definitely a great series, of course, but I am mainly referring to the last season: the trial of Taystee in which she is accused of murder — which she did not commit. As much as I enjoy this series, it was terribly frustrating to watch.
Would you rather read a book? Then go for 'Hello White People' or 'Freedom is a Constant Struggle'. The book of The Hate U Give is also a recommendation.
