Uh, why are we mainly hoarding toilet paper?

Collecting toilet paper coronavirus

The Netherlands is divided into two teams: the team that almost fights in the supermarket for a roll of paper vs. the second team: ‘Hey, can I come poop at your place if I run out?’ But where does that strange urge for toilet paper come from? De Telegraaf spoke with Groningen psychologist Hans van de Sande, and he explains it quite simply.

‘Just like squirrels, we have the tendency to stock up. We like to have enough supplies. We do this, for example, with money in the form of a bank account, and we are now doing this with important daily needs like toilet paper. It’s our instinct. When we see through photos and videos in the media that a lot of a certain product is being sold, we want that too. In our jargon, this is called the panic of acquisition. Do you see a direct link between this virus and toilet rolls? It has purely to do with our instinct. The fear that we ourselves can no longer get these supplies.’

So. I just wanted to share this with you. Now we know that again. So if you’re wondering if it’s necessary to stock up on toilet paper like crazy? Absolutely not. Do we feel crazy enough good about it? Apparently. Bunch of crazies.
