Say wine, snacks or haute cuisine and the gourmands at online food magazine FavorFlav know where to drink, how to eat it and what to cook. This time our cheffies serve you: this is how you get that big ice block out of your freezer.

Your freezer is your best friend. Because besides frozen pizzas you can also freeze many more things that make a delicious meal just within reach. The less fun part about this best friend: the thick layers of ice on the walls. Does your freezer look like a big glacier inside? Then it's time to defrost it, and with this step-by-step plan, it's a breeze.

Prevention is better than defrosting
So how does that excess ice come about? Most likely because you didn't close the door properly. This allows warm or humid air to enter the freezer. That comes into contact with the cold air, resulting in a thick layer of ice. And by the way, that's not good for your freezer. Freezing things takes longer, which also consumes more energy. So always make sure to close that door.

Here's how to proceed, in 4, 3, 2, 1…
1.
Start by emptying the freezer (where you might come across some very strange things…) so you can remove the ice. These cold days are perfect for this task because you can put the items from the freezer outside to keep them cold. Once everything is out, unplug it and you can start scraping.

2. Don't make the beginner's mistake of not placing a cloth or towel in front of the freezer, because a lot of ice means a lot of water. From the AD we got a golden tip: sliding a narrow baking tray underneath works well too.

3. You can best scrape off the ice with a spatula or an ice scraper. This allows you to easily clean the walls. Especially avoid using sharp objects. Thick layer of ice in the middle? Then place a bowl of boiling water at the bottom. This will help the ice melt faster.

4. Once the freezer is completely ice-free, you just need to give it a final clean with a cloth and warm water. Make sure the freezer is completely dry before plugging it back in, otherwise, you might have to start all over again. Also, check if some items you found in your freezer, behind that block of ice, can still go back in the freezer. Even in the freezer, your food has an expiration date.

And were you wondering how we ended up with this severely neglected freezer? It’s at FavorFlavs Sharon home and yes, she is deeply ashamed and has solemnly promised us to remove this layer of ice as soon as possible.
