If you have ‘Dutch calves’ and buying high boots is a terror

I can still remember the traumatic trips to the shoe store. ‘Kiki, why not try these?’ Oh yes, those are nice. Hops, foot in, zipper up and... oh... the zipper won't go up any further. It will happen one day.

‘And these? Try them? These seem a bit wider.’ She waves a cowboy pair in front of my nose. ‘No, never mind, mom, I see it already. There's no zipper in those at all, that's never going to work.‘ Sigh. And so I always came back from a shopping trip as a child with a pair of heels. Also really nice (because they always fit), but not practical at all for winter.

Pushed aside in my mind, but it happened: I STILL bought boots that wouldn't zip up. Maybe there's still a way to lose a few centimeters, uh, around my calves. Situation: that never happened, which meant those boots were only worn with pants over them so no one could see that I was secretly fooling around. And we all know: boots with pants over them, no one has ever really been happy about that.

Now I really understand that there are bigger problems at the moment. But my luxury problem sleeps every summer, and towards autumn I think again: damn it, I want high boots. But how? And why are boots for women with sturdy calves often those outdated, orthopedic cases that no one is waiting for?

On the other hand: I'm not the only one with this frustration. In fact: it works the other way around too. Of course, there are also women with very narrow calves. For them, buying boots is also a disappointment because those things never seem to fit well or worse: they keep slipping down. In short: if your calf is just a bit different from the norm, you tend to be the one in trouble in the shoe landscape.
