Even about the styling of Emily in Paris

I think that everyone who has seen The Devil Wears Prada immediately put on a long white blouse with a short black sweater over it. Right? I did it and it worked, because Ruby Wax (that hilariously funny comedienne) wanted to shop with me right away. How that happened I’ll tell you another time, but the point is that there are series that immediately suck you into your wardrobe and give you the tools to do something a little different with it. We did that with Sex and the City, with Gossip Girl, and we are doing it now with Emily in Paris.

And not entirely coincidentally, because the great styling genius behind Emily in Paris is Patricia Field, the woman who was also responsible for Carrie, her tulle skirt, her Louboutins and Jimmy Choos, and her Carrie necklace. At 78 (can I just say how lovely I find it that everyone in the US just keeps working until their old age? Nancy Pelosi, Anna Wintour, Grace Coddington…) she created another amazing new look.

Here too, Patricia Field mixed designer gear and couture with silliness. A hit is her iPhone case in the shape of an old-fashioned camera. Spot on because Emily takes photos everywhere, which catapults her into an instant Insta phenomenon. Field calls Emily's iPhone case the Carrie necklace of this series.

Field works thoroughly and immerses herself in the character. She even watches audition tapes and consulted Parisian stylists to find the perfect and unique finds. In her case (little tip!) Les Merveilles de Babellou in Clignancourt where she found rare pieces.

Not every look of Emily is equally successful. Were you charmed by that blouse with a hot air balloon flying past the Eiffel Tower depicted on it? Or the whole Eiffel Tower charm thing? Not very French at all, but Emily didn’t know that yet (just like how you tie your scarf to the side and not at the back) and that makes Field's styling so brilliant.

I can't wait for the next season. For that lovely Sylvie (I’m going to take a closer look at her styling too, because that is all successful and well done), for the juicy Gabriel, for Paris of course, but also very much for those delightful outfits from Patricia Field.
