Must visit: Meteora in Greece

Meteora

Packing my suitcase, closing the door behind me at home and seeing where I end up. You could call it my hobby. In this time, it is just handy to check the travel advice before you go, so this time no mountains in China or the Hawaii of South Korea that you really want to see, but a monastery in Greece. And honestly, Meteora looks like you would have to travel much further to get there.

The rock monasteries of Meteora are located in Thessaly on the mainland of Greece. The rocks got their unique shape from wind and water erosion. Hermits conquered the rocks and settled on top, almost never coming down and living in isolation. Later, they were joined by monks who founded the first monasteries. At its peak, the tops of the rocks counted twenty-four monasteries, with the most important being the still existing Great Meteoron.

Unfortunately, the monasteries have suffered greatly from destruction over the centuries, including during World War II. At this moment, there are only six monasteries left, which are now the main tourist attraction of Thessaly, but still serve as a refuge for prayer. And they are worth seeing. Preferably on the island tour in Greece? Then definitely go see Symi.
