Next level French toast to make at home

French toast

Say wine, snacks or haute cuisine and the foodies of the online food magazine FavorFlav know where to drink, how to eat it and what to cook. This time our chefs serve you: next level French toast to make at home.

The good old French toast, or ‘turning bitches’, as my American cousin calls them, is always a winner. The basic dish is quickly thrown together, but you can change the ingredients and toppings to your heart's content. Take a cue from the trendy birds of Kanarie Club. They decorate their French toast with strawberry compote and fresh strawberries, nuts, and a mint leaf – and we add a splash of liqueur to the mixture to start yet another week of corona a bit more fun.

Ingredients

  • old bread
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 deciliter milk
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 50 g butter
  • powdered sugar/cinnamon
  • optional: toppings of your choice, e.g. fresh strawberries
  • optional, but highly recommended during corona times or Monday morning blues: a splash of liqueur, such as Grand Marnier

How to make the French toast from Kanarie Club

1. Beat the eggs with the milk and sugar (and add a generous splash of liqueur if desired);

2. Then remove the crusts from the bread and dip the slices in the mixture (not too long as the bread will get soft);

3. Heat a knob of butter in the pan and fry the slices on medium heat one by one until lightly browned on both sides. Thick slices should fry for about 4 minutes on each side, thin slices for 2 minutes. Turn regularly if necessary;

4. Sprinkle with powdered sugar/cinnamon or add your favorite toppings.
