The 9 best tips from psychologists to have less anxiety

What a crazy time it is. I sometimes want so much to shut myself off from all that world news and all those figures about sick and intensive cares.

Of course you can't. But sometimes it is nice if you just go puzzling with your mobile in a completely different room in the house. Not being reachable for a while, not 92 corona updates read or hear on the radio. Sometimes I just want to forget how bad the situation is worldwide, because I also just find it all quite scary. And I want so badly to ignore it. Pretend it doesn't exist and we'll still have that weekend in Copenhagen together and that nice holiday home with our group of friends. Pretend that the crèche really is open again on Monday anyway. Pretending I can go back to work. Pretend we can just eat pasta again at that nice little place down the street. But no, for now little is happening, we're sitting inside and we're doing that for the very people who work in healthcare. To make sure the virus doesn't spread. We stay home so they can continue to do their jobs. We stay home for the safety of so many others.

Still, it takes getting used to and the realisation has yet to dawn on me: for now, much in our country remains locked. For good reason, of course. And if, like me, you also sometimes feel a little scared of what's to come... Here are the 9 best tips from psychologists worldwide to combat anxiety. To be less afraid in these crazy, crazy times.

  1. Get enough sleep
  2. Remember the facts and not everyone's opinion
  3. Establish a clear rhythm during the day
  4. Drink less coffee and alcohol
  5. Exercise thirty minutes every day
  6. Make sure you don't fret about life all day, clearly give yourself half an hour a day that you are allowed to worry about the crisis. And for the rest of the day, park those unpleasant thoughts.
  7. Make video calls with your friends and family
  8. Create positive distractions. Read that nice book, grab a magazine, put on a face mask and tidy up your closet. A clean and tidy house is calming anyway, especially since we are home so much now
  9. Get into a warm bath, take a hot shower and take a few deep breaths in and out

And if you need to remember one thing it is this: your fear is not going to change the situation change, so you might as well not have it.
