This simple household task makes you intensely happy according to psychologists

Since I have two children who walk and love to throw peanut butter sandwiches in the air, I clean up more than ever.
There is always a lost blob of drool somewhere. Or a spat-out spoon of yogurt. A crushed baby biscuit. A leaking bottle of juice. Well, whether you have children or not: cleaning up at home is always part of it. Where there is living, there is mess. And that's not so bad. not so bad after all for you, research shows. Because doing simple household chores and ticking them off makes you happy, according to psychologists.
What you especially want to do from now on? The dishes. If you approach this completely mindfully and take your time, it could feel like a real moment for yourself. That warm water, the crackling and sparkling soap, the nice fresh scent of soap, that relaxing sound of dripping from the tap... Before you know it, after three plates and a pot, you are completely zen.
It has been scientifically proven. In a study, half of a group had to wash the dishes mindfully: 18 items to be precise. The other half also washed those 18 items, but didn't think about it. You guessed it: when you become aware of the warm water and the soap and everything around you, when you really take that moment for yourself, then something as simple as doing the dishes makes you feel happy. The good news is, especially for everyone with a dishwasher at home: it also works with vacuuming, cleaning windows, and mopping. Or folding the laundry – thank god, because with two children, two cats, and a husband at home, there is always a full laundry basket to be found.
The trick is simple: take a moment to appreciate the calm you have when you do this oh-so-ordinary task. You don't have to think about complicated life questions, you don't have to prove yourself to anyone, and you see immediate results. You have no stress. You have nothing else on your mind than those clean onesies that need to go back in the closet. That does you more good than you realize.
What also works according to experts is doing it together with your partner: that would give your relationship a boost. So come on, grab that basket of clean laundry with full dedication and start folding. You will both be happier and your house will be tidy again. Then you both have all the desire to mess up that freshly washed bed. Win-win.
