Preparation: 10 min
Cooking: 10 min
Servings: 2

INGREDIENTS
6 white casino slices of bread
6 tablespoons mayonnaise
1 tablespoon mustard (if you like it)
4 leaves of lettuce, such as iceberg or romaine
100 g turkey breast or chicken breast (sandwich filling)
6 slices of bacon, crispy fried
1 large beef tomato, sliced
salt and pepper
a handful of plain chips

First a bit of history, because who came up with the idea of making a gigantic sandwich with everything on it? The club sandwich was most likely invented in America at the end of the nineteenth century during a horse race in New York.

Timing is everything
But what can be so difficult about building a sandwich? A club sandwich requires mastery of all the basic techniques. Crispy bacon from the pan, crispy toasted bread and creamy mayo. All of that also has to be ready at exactly the same time. That crispy bacon suddenly becomes much less tasty when you’re chewing on tough bread.

Delicious toppings for your club sandwich
A classic club sandwich consists of three layers of toasted white casino bread topped with chicken breast, bacon, tomato, lettuce, mayonnaise, and of course chips on the side. Of course, you can vary endlessly with this. Truffle mayo, grilled chicken, and avocado are popular toppings that always do well.

  1. Here’s how to make the best classic club sandwich
  2. Spread the slices of bread on both sides with 4 tablespoons of mayonnaise. Toast the bread in a pan or a toaster until golden brown on both sides. Let them cool down.
  3. Spread four slices on one side with the remaining mayonnaise and possibly some mustard.
  4. Now you’re going to make two stacks: place a slice of lettuce on the mayo-mustard side of two slices of bread. Top with turkey breast or chicken breast. Place a slice of bread on top, add more lettuce, bacon, and slices of tomato. Sprinkle the tomato with salt and pepper. Place the last two slices on top. Stick toothpicks through to hold the sandwich together.
  5. Cut the sandwiches diagonally into four triangles, serve with some chips.
