10x food with more vitamin C than oranges

Woman drinking orange juice

Say wine, snacks or haute cuisine and the gourmands at online food magazine FavorFlav know where to drink, how to eat it and what to cook. This time our cheffies serve you: 10x foods with more vitamin C than oranges.

Every morning a glass of fresh juice and if you start to feel a bit sniffly, an extra glass? Good plan, because vitamin C helps you recover faster from a cold. And if those oranges come out of your nose, you can always add these ten foods to your shopping list, as they each contain even more vitamin C than oranges.

Headache, coughing and sneezing, then you might have caught a cold. Nothing serious, but you want to get rid of that sniffle and that miserable feeling quickly. Chicken soup will definitely help, but these vegetables and fruits are also super healthy, as they contain much more vitamin C than oranges and lemons.

Red pepper
A bowl of chopped chili peppers contains 107.8 milligrams of vitamin C. Compare that to your orange juice: that's only 50 milligrams in a glass of 100 milliliters. So, enjoy sambal in your food if you catch a cold. Moreover, the University of Buffalo has found that capsaicin, the substance that makes those peppers so damn hot, is very effective against muscle pain.

Red bell pepper
Red bell pepper contains almost four times as much vitamin C: 190 milligrams per 100 grams of cleaned pepper. The fact that the pepper also provides vitamin A in your body is a nice bonus, as that is the vitamin that promotes beautiful hair and strong nails. Green bell pepper contains slightly less vitamin C, but 120 milligrams per 100 grams, which is still a nice score.

Kale
Sorry for that trendy term, but kale is really a superfood. More than 80 milligrams of vitamin C, plus vitamin K and all sorts of minerals: that kale mash from back in the day is really not so crazy. If you're really a trendy chick, then you naturally eat kale chips. Crispy and good for your sniffly nose.

Broccoli
Bám, 132 milligrams of vitamin C per 100 grams. Plus dietary fiber, plus only 30 calories, so light. And when you add that broccoli might also prevent cancer, then you know it: green winner!

Papaya
You didn't expect that, did you? But a papaya contains just a bit more vitamin C than orange juice, and a substance in that bright orange giant helps clear your stuffy nose quickly.

Strawberries
Almost 90 milligrams of vitamin C in a bowl of strawberries, so that's a nice boost. And did you know that strawberries contain a lot of folic acid?

Cauliflower
Not sexy, but tasty and healthy, as cauliflower contains no less than 128 milligrams of vitamin C per 100 grams of vegetable. It doesn't matter if you cook the vegetable, put it in a tagine, or roast it, you'll still get those vitamins in.

Brussels sprouts
Do you like Brussels sprouts, or can you not even think about them? Give it a try anyway: 80 milligrams of vitamin C and a bowl of fiber. Do you dread them? You can always fry them...

Kiwi
If you eat two kiwis, you'll get 190 milligrams of vitamin C. That's a nice boost. They also contain a good amount of potassium and copper. If you eat them with the skin on, you'll also get a good amount of dietary fiber.
