Even about people who see destinations as individuals

wieke behind her laptop

I see it so often on social media, especially after events like Lowlands. And I find it so silly every time. Maybe it's unreasonable to get so worked up about it, but it really has something pretentious about it: labeling your destinations as people. Just don't do it. ‘Lowlands, you were amazing again!’ No, no, no. Lowlands, it was amazing again.

Even worse, actually seen: ‘Lowlands, if you were a country, I would move to you.’ Excuuuuse me? That doesn't sound appealing to me at all, since the Lowlands terrain is only open to you for four days a year. Furthermore, it's just an open plain with some grass and mud. Far from a dream move, it seems to me.

Or people who post: ‘Bali, you’ve been good to me/treat me well/I’ll miss you/see you next year’ and everything in that category. That always comes across as so pretentious, as if the person in question has a very special bond with this Bali. They definitely want to let you know that they have been there countless times and apparently that is very cool, but it also rubs in that my potential vacation to Bali won't come close, because I don't have that special bond yet.

Isn't it a bit strange that I'm being pointed out that some people have more of a connection with a destination than others? As if you can claim that. And it's always the destinations that are popular and trendy at a certain moment. Bali, Ibiza, Dubai, New York; the more expensive destinations and the Instagrammable destinations. Or do you ever see: ‘Deventer, I'm going to miss you’? ‘Capelle aan den IJssel, till we meet again’? No, exactly: never.

So, that's my frustration for the weekend. Now let's forget it with a glass of wine. Amayzine, I'll see you again tomorrow. Oh shit...

PS: I'm luckily not the only one who can get worked up about this. Just check the TikTok video below. Tess, I completely understand you.
