Netflix tip of the day: My Unorthodox Life

New week, new Netflix tips. And today that's a new reality series. No worries: not mega ordinary à la Too Hot To Handle (although I can also enjoy that), but one that is genuinely interesting.

It's called My Unorthodox Life and season 1 is now fully online. The series revolves around Julia Haart, who is the CEO of Elite World Group, but was also a member of an ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in the past. She now has a family (which you see a lot of) with whom she lives in Tribeca, New York City. Quite a glamorous lifestyle, then. And that's precisely a combination I find very interesting: the glam of New York and the penthouse they inhabit and the intense past of the orthodox life she once led.

That's why the series sometimes feels a bit like The Real Housewives, due to the glam, but without the exaggerated scripted drama. Julia is living her best life now that she can finally wear what she wants and talk about what she wants. In the past, there was absolutely no open discussion about sex, and now she does so openly. She is also busy with her business and making her way in the fashion world; and she wasn't allowed to wear anything from that fashion before, of course.

A delightful mix if you want to daydream about the lifestyle of the rich and famous with New York as a setting, but still want a bit more substance than a standard reality series. A nice escape, this one.
