Order a Barbajada once

Say wine, snacks or haute cuisine and the gourmands at online food magazine FavorFlav know where to drink, how to eat it and what to cook. This time our cheffies serve you: Italian coffee with chocolate.

Choosing between hot chocolate and coffee? No need. The Italian drink Barbajada, a creamy chocolate coffee, is an interesting mix of both.

In Italy, it has been consumed for a century and a half. Hot in winter, cold in summer, but always with a generous dollop of whipped cream on top. The special coffee is named after its inventor, Domenico Barbaja. He worked as a waiter in a café in Milan around the mid-19th century and mixed cream and a bit of chocolate into the espresso.

A classic Barbajada consists of ingredients that you usually already have at home: (strong) coffee, sugar, cream, and chocolate. Want to give your cup of coffee an Italian chocolate twist? You can make your own Barbajada like this.
