Outdoor swimming is the new walking

woman swimming outside

Now that all the cafes and restaurants are still on lockdown for another month, and the gyms too, we need to think of other things to entertain ourselves a bit. The fun part is, at least for me, that my appointments with friends now mainly take place while being active. I'm walking until my feet are sore. Win-win, because it's nice to chat like this, side by side, you're moving and you still have a nice experience and see some nature. But in the meantime, we might be ready for a step up, because suddenly I see everyone around me swimming outside. Yes, in unheated open waters. Apparently it's great for your fat burning and your immune system, and let's be honest: if you can do that, there's not much that can throw you off balance, right?

I quickly dove into the Kampioen for some do's and don'ts. Here we go.

1. Start with a bucket
Put a bucket of water outside in the evening and pour it over yourself in the morning. Then you'll know what to expect when you actually dive into the water. Cold showers are a good idea anyway.

2. Mental preparation
Outdoor swimmers also advise to take a walk every day at seven in the morning for a week with just a layer of clothing. And it's also recommended to go to the place where you're going to swim later. Face the monster, so to speak.

3. Don't do it if...
You have a weak heart, are pregnant, have kidney problems, or are generally not fit. If you've done it and it took a long time to warm up again, you're also not really suitable for the outdoor swim.

4. No longer than a minute
Definitely not at first. Later you can build it up. Don't trust your feelings because once you're in the water, the cold seems to disappear, but it's definitely still there.

5. Bring a thermos
Make sure you enter the water warmed up. First, walk or run a bit and bring a thermos with a warm drink for afterwards. And warm socks, oh, how nice that will taste.

6. Don't keep your head cool
Oh, it doesn't get any sexier, but it's fun, so put on a swim cap too. This way you keep your head warm and you're also recognizable just in case.

As I write this down, I actually feel like it. And in that fireplace session afterwards.
