SFOGLIATELLA: THE ITALIAN ANSWER TO THE CROISSANT

Sfogliatelle
Say wine, snacks or haute cuisine and the gourmands at online food magazine FavorFlav know where to drink, how to eat it and what to cook. This time our cheffies serve you: Sfogliatella, the Italian answer to the croissant.

A symbol of the Italian city of Naples, that is also how the sfogliatella is described. The snack resembles a croissant, but what is it actually?

Simply put: a filled sweet roll that is often eaten at breakfast. It comes in two varieties: the Riccia and the Frolla.

Riccia
The Riccia usually has the shape of a shell and has a flaky exterior. This could be seen as the original version of the sfogliatella.

Frolla
The Frolla is a simpler version of the sfogliatella and is made from crumbly dough, giving it a smooth exterior.

Filling
Traditionally, the sfogliatella is filled with a sweet mix of ricotta and semolina with candied orange. Nowadays, there are also other fillings ranging from cheese to almond paste.

Breakfast
We mentioned it earlier: Italians eat it for breakfast, preferably with a cappuccino. The ultimate experience: when it just comes out of the oven. Then it is the tastiest. In short: a must-try if you go to Naples.
