Simple tips to get your face out of the wrinkles in the morning

My alarm clock is my iPhone, which is usually next to me in airplane mode. I set it up so that I know exactly how many hours I can sleep. Unfortunately, no morning goes by without the sound of ‘early birds‘ being heard. Not real birds, of course; I live in Amsterdam and the cheerful animals I would like to hear are not to be found on my little balcony, it's the sound from my phone that always wakes me from a deep sleep, resulting in quite a few lines, folds, and puffy eyes on my face. A cold splash of water can sometimes help, but not always. Sounds familiar? Then you might find these tips useful.

The way you fall asleep can already say a lot
That stress and unhealthy living is not really good for your nightly rest is well known, but it also causes poor circulation, which leads to skin aging, but also to dark circles. You literally can't cream against this. Your skin needs enough sleep to recover from various damages and skin irritations. It is true that dark circles are partly hereditary, but your lifestyle and sleep certainly play a role.

Sleeping position
If you are a stomach sleeper or like to sleep on your side, you are more likely to wake up with folds in your face. If you know that you like to sleep this way, it is wise to look at the fabric of your pillowcase. Make sure it has no texture and go for a silk or satin (with cotton) version. This keeps your skin smoother and is also much better for your hair. Don't forget to wash your pillowcase often. I use a pillowcase for about two days on average: first one side and then the other. Of course, you can fill in that it is best to sleep on your back, then all the creams from the evening routine can also absorb better and your hair gets greasy less quickly.

Water, water, and more water
Hydration is very important for the flexibility of the skin. Just leave that bag of chips in the evening and drink at least two liters of water throughout the day. If you get enough moisture, the chance of getting sleep wrinkles is much smaller. We also shouldn't forget physical exercise and vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli because they ensure that moisture is properly drained, reducing or even preventing swelling.

The cold spoons
You read it everywhere: small spoons from the freezer that provide cooling and reduce swelling. This may be a temporary solution and it literally feels refreshing, but it's actually not very good for your skin. The skin under your eyes is very delicate, so you need to handle it carefully. It's better to use a cooling cream and gently massage the skin around your eyes, or use a special roller suitable for under the eyes with which you make soft, rolling movements. Which roller is suitable for this, you can find here.

A dry skin without you knowing it
The skin around your eyes can be dry without feeling tight. This leads to fine lines, but you also get swollen eyelids more quickly, making you look extra tired. Ensure soft hydration around your eyes so that it feels smooth and soft, and your gaze is immediately much fresher in the morning. Don't forget to protect the skin around your eyes from the sun by applying at least a factor 30 and wearing sunglasses.

Ingredients in your skincare products
A nice refreshing menthol? A wonderfully scented cream or fine essential oils? You'd better not use these kinds of ingredients near your eyes. This quickly leads to swollen eyelids, aside from your sleep. Unfortunately, there are no creams that completely make swollen eyes disappear – it would really be a dream if that were the case! Of course, you can look at what your skin around your eyes needs. Vitamin C or retinol helps prevent or reduce fine lines, and if your moisture balance is not quite right, you can look for a super-rich cream with Omegas.

Makeup
Unfortunately, we can't completely conceal swollen eyes with makeup, but for that tired look, you can use a concealer that is a bit lighter than your skin and is not matte or too covering. Also apply a light eyeshadow in the corners of your eyes and just under your eyebrows. This will make you look a bit fresher and more awake right away. Primer with a glow for under and around your eyes also works wonders.

Unfortunately, we can't completely prevent those folds and puffy eyes, but every little bit helps, right?
