The funniest facts about the Spice Girls

Who hasn't grown up with this? Even if you come from the year 2000 (and are — or will be — 21 years old, I feel so old here), you probably still scream along at the top of your lungs when Wannabe comes on. Or you post an Insta Story on Mother's Day with Mama in the background. You can join in the dance on Stop... You get what I mean. Everyone loves the Spice Girls. I really wanted Geri's dress with the English flag on it. But otherwise, I was Emma because yes, blonde hair, right.
But even I, as a mega fan (my entire bedroom was filled with posters and there wasn't a centimeter left, much to my parents' delight) didn't know all these facts. Ready to check if you were a bigger fan than I was?
1. Victoria was hardly in The Final Five
Singer Mel Coloma initially had Victoria's spot, which meant there were three Mels in the Spice Girls. That wasn't the reason she got kicked out, by the way, because that's much funnier: her voice was found to be ‘too good’ and she would outshine the other girls with her talent. HAHA. Very bitter: ‘I should have been in the Spice Girls but I was too good.’ And so they went back to Victoria who — good for her — didn't necessarily have singing talent. Is she jealous of the Spice Girls? Coloma said she ‘would have loved to have had Victoria's life, but she is also happy with where she is now and what she has achieved.’ She works for the NHS and does gigs as a singer at weddings.
2. Spice Girls was not their original name
After some shuffling with members (Emma also joined after someone left and Geri got a second chance), there was another problem: the name. The management ultimately decided that the girl group should be called The Touch and I don't know if it's because I love the Spice Girls, but this is really the only name that works.
3. The Wannabe video was shot in one take (!)
Ehh, WHUT? What natural talents these girls are. The music video for Wannabe is also delightful to watch back, and I really didn't know it was just done in one go. Okay, they did rehearse a few times, but still. Not everyone was a fan by the way: the big record executives found it terrible and wanted a different music video, but the girls refused. Successfully, but I don't think I need to tell you that.
4. Geri's dress with the English flag was... a tea towel and originally a dress from Gucci
Aha, that's why I couldn't find it anywhere in a store. It wasn't a dress at all, but just something that normally lies in the kitchen. She wore it for the first time at the BRIT Awards in 1997 (and it was later auctioned for £41,320) and was only put together days before that event. It was originally a little black dress from Gucci, but that was a bit too boring for Geri, so she asked her sister to sew a tea towel with the English flag on it. So said, so done.
5. They didn't come up with the term ‘Girl Power’ themselves
They were known for it, but they can't take the credit for it. Girl Power was first thrown into the world by another British girl group called Shampoo (never heard of them? No, me neither). They got the term from some movement in the ’90s called the ‘Riot Grrl Movement’ (again, never heard of it? No, me neither...), but when the Spice Girls started using the term, it really became popular.
6. Beyoncé covered a song from Victoria
Of all the ex-Spice Girls, Victoria is the only one who has never had a solo career. That might have something to do with the fact that she can't sing (see point 1) and that her microphone was often off during performances. But hey, she was a superstar and she did try: with the solo album called Come Together, which ultimately never saw the light of day. Much to the delight of Queen B herself, because she took the song Resentment from it and released it herself (it's on the album B'Day).
