The wine condom

wine condom

Say wine, snacks or haute cuisine and the gourmands at online food magazine FavorFlav know where to drink, how to eat it and what to cook. This time our cheffies serve you: the wine condom.

Such an opened wine bottle that no longer fits in the fridge because the cork sticks out. Or just a corkless, half-empty bottle that you take home and then has to stand awkwardly upright the whole way. Recognizable? For those moments, there is the wine condom, perhaps the most fun and classy protection ever.

The wine condom is therefore not a condom that tastes like Chardonnay. It does look strikingly like the real thing: a rolled-up rubber sleeve, wrapped in shiny, golden foil that smoothly unrolls to prevent spills and leaks. But in this case, the object being covered is an opened bottle. Handy for storing or transporting a leftover bit of wine. No more trouble with leaks or a cork that no longer fits, because the makers promise a perfect fit and a waterproof seal, thanks to the special ‘shrink-to-fit’ technology. Moreover, this condom can be used multiple times. Good luck finding that with the original.

Safe for home and on the go
Such a leftover bit of wine is often too good to throw away or simply leave behind in a restaurant. But usually, the cork has miraculously disappeared or struggles to go back into the neck, making the whole thing no longer fit in the fridge door. And nothing is as annoying as a bottle wobbling at a 45-degree angle in the fridge. The wine condom is ideal for such moments: it seals even better than the original cork, and the bottle doesn't get a millimeter taller. So it always fits.

Only with sparkling wine is the stopper less suitable. There's a good chance that the bubble pressure after a while will create a festive (but awkward) balloon on the bottle. And don't expect that the roll of rubber will ensure a longer shelf life for the wine. The condom does seal the bottle leak-proof, but it cannot prevent wine from living less long under the influence of oxygen.

Fits in every wallet
But anyway, it's just a cute thing. And the rave reviews on Amazon (‘Best thing since sliced bread!’) promise a lot. It easily fits in any pocket or wallet, so you'll never have to leave home without protection again.

They are sold in packs of six or more. Stylishly held together in a nice box and individually wrapped in a shiny, resealable cover. You can buy it here.
