Tips from Paula Begoun herself

Paula Begoun

I was so nervous. Because Paula Begoun is the woman behind the skincare brand Paula’s Choice, sat on the couch with Oprah, has twenty-five different books to her name, and is for me the greatest beauty guru. The launch of the CBD Oil + Retinol and the CBD Milk is one that I quickly forget. Besides the launch, I also had the opportunity to interview her one-on-one.

According to Paula, you can't start anti-aging too early. ‘On day two from your birth, you are actually already two days too old. Not that you should start applying CBD then, of course, you also need to see what your skin needs. This is very personal: what works very well for you can only give me impurities. It's also the substance that plays a role. For people with dry skin, oils and lotions work very well, but if you have oily skin, you should look for a gel. So you are searching for the perfect skincare, but once you find it, you will benefit from it for years,’ Paula explains.

Her two CBD products are a game changer when it comes to skin aging. CBD stands for cannabidiol and calms sensitive skin by nourishing restless cells. You recognize these cells by redness, a tight or taut skin, dullness, or the beginning of fine lines. Retinol (vitamin A) has also been added to the CBD oil. These two ingredients are the perfect duo to prevent skin aging but also reduce the lines that are already there. The Milk is a preventive solution for an aging skin, and softens and evens out the complexion. It just depends on what your skin needs. Additionally, she had these tips. Handle it carefully, because you won't get better.

So switching skincare products per season is not really necessary?
‘No, absolutely not. First, discover what your skin needs. The only difference per season is your SPF. In summer, this is at least factor 50++++ and in winter, SPF30 is fine. As long as you apply sun protection every day, 365 days a year, at the end of your routine.’

Of course, there is no miracle cure, we all know that. But which product do you think comes closest?
‘That doesn't exist, you could say an SPF, but you don't use that at night. Everyone needs a different treatment, and that's why we have so many products in the collection: so we have something for all skin types. For example, I really can't tolerate retinol, my skin reacts enormously to it. Too bad, because it works perfectly against skin aging. If you are unsure about certain ingredients, you can always test it first on the inside of your arm to see if it causes a reaction.’

Do you also let your skin do other things besides applying products, like peels or laser treatments?
‘Ha, certainly. How else can I look like this at sixty-seven? My skincare routine really can't compare to this. It mainly ensures the health of my skin barrier, but unfortunately doesn't completely prevent wrinkles. I've done peels before, but since I use an exfoliant every day, I don't find it necessary to give your skin such a shot all at once. The same goes for a laser: if you really have pigmentation spots or large pores, laser can work well for you. I prefer to go for ‘more results for your money’, so I choose a lifting if needed, for example, for your eyes, for botox or fillers. So I do use that, in a subtle, natural way.’

Next week, Paula will explain how to prevent an irritated skin when wearing a face mask and tell us everything about the famous facial rollers, skin icing, micro needling, and alcohol in products. And as a cherry on top, she will also give us the recipe for the perfect Margarita. One that she only drinks on special occasions, ‘because it immediately makes you drunk.’.
