Going on vacation to Italy? Here's how to do it

I just got back and believe me: I'm counting the days until I can go again. That undoubtedly has to do with the Dutch weather (Saturday gets a 2 from Weeronline. A TWO!), but also with the intensely吸引力 that Italy has on me. I get a lot of questions about how it is there now. With corona. And what you need to prepare for.

1. To be able to go, you need this

  • A proof of vaccination (vaccinated more than two weeks ago)
  • An antigen or PCR test with a negative result not older than 48 hours
  • A filled out passenger locator form
  • If you travel to Sicily, you will be tested again on site.

But: my family has flown to Italy three times in the last month and each time, NO ONE asked for anything. Not for the negative test, not for the form, and not for the QR code as proof of vaccination. I can imagine you don't want to take the risk, but know that they probably won't ask for it.

2. Once in Italy
Italy is green so things are going much better there than with us. But to reach and maintain that green status, they are also quite strict. Masks are not required outside, but as soon as you enter somewhere, it is mandatory. Even if you just walk to the bathroom in a restaurant or if you order a coffee at the bar.

Temperatures
You shouldn't be surprised if they measure your temperature. That happens very quietly with a thermometer held briefly to your forehead. But I experienced being temperature checked before I was allowed on the beach. It seems a bit exaggerated but hey, if that's all there is...

3. The return journey, this is what you need
Absolutely nothing. No negative test, no QR code as proof of vaccination. Just yourself and your passport. And the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends doing a self-test at home just to be safe. When we landed, they were handing those out at Schiphol. I thought that was a great initiative.
