I fear a lover of painting has passed me by. Show me an etching by Rembrandt, speak about it enthusiastically and I am captivated, but I also quickly lose that fascination. Call me a culture barbarian. By the way, I have never felt this with photography.
To capture an image that says and feels everything is what I consider art. For our magazine, Vivian Hoorn took a photo of Chelsey Weimar in a taxi in New York. I see freedom in that image, it is still one of my favorite photos. It is an image I can keep looking at. Last week I experienced it again, this time it was a portrait made by Steve McCurry. You probably know him from his most famous cover for National Geographic ever. The Afghan girl with green eyes. I found one from the same series, the portrait is called Arabian Rose. The same green eyes, red veil, framed by her hands. I find it worthy of framing, at home on the wall. One small problem: my house has rather few walls. Next time I should buy something else. And of course, I am talking about a different house.
