Traveling is a bit tricky right now, but oh man, just like many others, I am already planning my trips afterwards. Fins Lapland has actually been high on my list for years, because yes: the northern lights and huskies. What more could you want? Well, you want to go to Svalbard. That is the northernmost point of our planet where people live. It is a small island above Scandinavia (it belongs to Norway) and there are over 2600 people living there. Yes, exactly: that is indeed really incredibly few. Fun fact: they have more snowmobiles here than people, and if you have ever ridden one, you know that this is really too much fun to do.
Svalbard is called Spitsbergen by us and is the perfect place to see the northern lights. Anyway, it seems to me an incredibly fascinating place to visit. The capital (as far as you can call it a city) is called Longyearbyen, named after the explorer Longyear, and at the moment they have zero sunlight there. ZERO. That changes when spring begins and then it is not night at any moment. The perks of living near the Antarctic.
Life in Spitsbergen is definitely a far-from-your-bed show: you often have to go out with a gun so you can scare off any polar bears or defend yourself against those gigantic beasts. In the streets of Longyearbyen, you spot arctic foxes everywhere, and they are really incredibly cute. And yes, they have huskies there too. And seals, sea lions, snow goats... Too much fun.
So I am already daydreaming about this place and have mapped everything out by now. The view from Longyearbyen, of the gigantic mountains, and everything is completely white. It really seems like a magical sight to me. Not convinced? Oookeeee, then I'll try it again with these photos. Definitely check this Insta account, because every photo is very special.
