Admitting you were wrong is never fun, but in this case it is completely justified: I take back everything I ever said about vegan food. And especially the meat substitutes, because I never had much faith in those. But in my defense: I couldn't have known or expected that we would make so many leaps in such a short time. That nowadays you can be fully convinced that you are eating meat, and that it turns out to be vegan after all: I still find it bizarre. Bizarrely delicious too, fortunately.
In that category, I discovered a new favorite: TiNDLE, which had its launch this week at one of my favorite spots in Amsterdam, Coffee & Coconuts. You'll be seeing me there more often in the coming time, because it's one of the six hotspots where they will be working with TiNDLE. That's right: you won't find TiNDLE in supermarkets, but at the coolest restaurants. But what is it exactly? Plant-based chicken. And believe me: you won't taste the difference. My god, this is delicious.
And the chefs can do all sorts of things with it. From fried TiNDLE at Cabrón (a must-visit if you love Mexican food) to the vegan bao at Coffee & Coconuts… You have to try these and offer them as a test to the biggest meat lover you know (in my circles, that was me, and I’m converted). Fun fact: even at the Rotisserie, where they are known for burgers and their spit-roasted chicken, they will be serving TiNDLE.
As I said: I take back everything about vegan food. Bring on the vegan month (because that’s what it is this month), I can handle it just fine like this. Curious too? I get it. Then swing by the IJ-Hallen this weekend between 09:00 and 16:30, because they are giving out 300 free bites a day. Even if you don’t have a ticket, by the way, because they are outside, not inside. Good excuse to spend a day in Amsterdam-Noord, I think.
