Why everyone is talking about Behind Her Eyes

Why everyone is talking about Behind Her Eyes

Last Friday was actually just like other Fridays: couch, blanket, me and Netflix. But lately, I had lost a bit of my Netflix inspiration. Quite frustrating (especially since you can't really do anything else during these curfew times), so I had already set up a lot of wrong things, and turned them off again.

But this Friday I knew it: Behind Her Eyes it would be. The whole internet was talking about it, the plot twist at the end was said to be really too bizarre for words and it also seemed exciting. Plus: if I put my foot on the gas with that lollipop, I could finish it in one evening, because all in all it lasts about five hours. Quite a long sit, but I've faced hotter fires before.

Now I have to be very honest and say that during the first two to three episodes I thought: really? Is this the series that everyone is so lyrical about? Because I found it quite... Boring? Not much happens and yes, it is quite exciting, but I have no idea what exactly is going on. The music makes it exciting, and the ominous glances and inexplicable events do too. But at some point, they need to be explained and that didn't really happen. Why is Adele acting so weird? Is she being kept crazy by her husband David? Why is she taking all those medications and sometimes going crazy because she doesn't take them anymore? In short: what on earth is going on with that girl?

By the end of episode 3, I was fed up: I need to know what that plot twist is to see if this is even worth watching. So I looked it up and seriously, what the F, writers? How do you come up with this?! It is certainly bizarre to say the least, unexpected too and there's a small chance this has been done before. Yes, brace yourself: here come the spoilers.

The big twist at the end is that Adele has astral projection. In other words, you can move your soul/psyche anywhere to what you know in your thoughts. That's why she wanted a detailed tour of David's office and was snooping around in Louise's house. She also taught this to Louise, who can now do it too. BUT: Adele is actually not Adele, she is Rob in Adele's body. Rob taught this to the real Adele when they were both in an institution and then he switched bodies with her, and then Rob-in-Adele killed Adele-in-Rob.

Now Rob-in-Adele is married to David, and through a cunning plan, Rob-in-Adele manages to switch with Louise's psyche, so Rob-in-Adele becomes Rob-in-Louise and Louise becomes Louise-in-Adele, and she dies in the fire at home. Are we still following? No, exactly.

What I find most striking is that this David just doesn't notice anything. NOTHING. This gentleman is supposedly an incredibly good psychiatrist and then marries Louise, but he has no idea that his last two loves suddenly completely switched personalities. In fact, he doesn't realize that Louise suddenly has the same personality that Adele had in her last years. And he calls himself a good psychiatrist. Pfff.

I'm actually curious if more people felt a bit tricked by this ending. Suddenly it's a kind of supernatural series that you really don't see coming at all. It is surprising, but whether I thought it was a good idea... I still think I wouldn't necessarily recommend the series. Just read the mega plot twist right away and then the whole series is no longer needed. Or just watch the last episode, at least something really happened there.
