Why we shouldn't complain about that curfew

may walking down the street

The toolbox is almost empty, Wouter de Winther said recently on Jinek, and that's how it is. We have turned it upside down and there is very little left that can help us finally contain corona. The hospitality industry is closed, schools are closed, stores are therefore closed, but we are still not doing well enough when it comes to reducing infections. The last resort is the curfew, which has had a positive effect in many countries.

Because the numbers don't lie: most infections occur in a domestic setting.

Still, the House of Representatives was up in arms when the curfew was discussed. Something that surprises me, to be honest. Every day, Mark Rutte and Hugo de Jonge are attacked for their policy. The vaccinations are coming too late (true) and we can't do that to the healthcare staff. They have a point, but work is being done on that. And if another measure is taken to curb the number of infections, that suddenly becomes off the table. Because we can't take away people's freedom, can we?

Well, I am totally team curfew. Let it start at 9:00 PM, then you can still take your little walk after a long day of work and homeschooling. And otherwise, you can borrow your neighbor's dog for a bit, because walking the dog is still allowed. And delivery drivers can still be on their way, as well as caregivers and people with vital professions.

And I don't know about you, but I haven't had an overwhelming urge to go out on the street at all since 8:00 PM. Too cold, too dark, too wet, too slippery for me. Just give me The Smartest Person, a cup of tea or a glass of wine, a couch, and a blanket. Those long evenings are coming back.

Of course it's not fun, but if it's tough for a while, let's drink that whole poison cup together. We'll replace it in May with a delicious cocktail. And we'll drink that outside.
