Ashton Kutcher has an autoimmune disease: ‘Glad I'm still alive’

Heavy news about Ashton Kutcher: the actor told Access Hollywood exclusively that he was struggling with the autoimmune disease vasculitis, a rare condition that causes inflammation in the blood vessels, disrupting blood flow and potentially damaging organs and tissues. Sounds serious, and it certainly is. For Ashton Kutcher, this disease meant that he could not hear, see, or walk. Wow.
The actor will soon be seen in an episode of Running Wild with Bear Grylls: The Challenge and spoke about it with Access Hollywood. In this episode, he will delve deeper into this condition and his experiences with it, but he already opened up a little.
‘About two years ago, I had this bizarre, super-rare form of vasculitis. It took away my sight and my hearing, and my whole balance disappeared.’ Eventually, it took about a year before he got all of that back.
‘You really don't appreciate those kinds of things until they're gone. Until you think: I don't know if I'll ever see again, I don't know if I'll ever hear again, I don't know if I'll ever be able to walk again. I'm glad I'm still alive.’ Bear Grylls agrees: ‘It's a blessing to say that you're still alive.’
According to himself, Ashton Kutcher does not let this disease hinder him anymore. On the contrary, he wants to take something positive from it: he seizes every opportunity in life to grow as a person.
‘At the moment you start seeing obstacles as opportunities that are meant for you, to give you what you need, life becomes fun, right? You start surfing on top of your problems instead of living bent under them.’
The episode with Ashton Kutcher will be aired on Monday on American television, on National Geographic.
