These celebs received unjustified hate on social media

The internet is a beautiful, but also a crazy place. I still find it surprising, you know. When I scroll through Facebook or Instagram, I really see the most bizarre reactions passing by. For example, Jaimie Vaes, who has received a lot of criticism lately while she was the victim in the situation. Really, the insults I saw thrown at her, I really wonder what goes through your mind. But unfortunately, this is not the first and absolutely not the last time this happens: these celebs also faced a lot of backlash and completely unjustly.
1. Sinéad O’Connor
This Irish singer (best known for her hit Nothing Compares 2 U) was canceled before canceling was a thing, and completely unjustly. She wanted to bring attention to child abuse in the church and that fell on deaf ears, until she tore up a photo of Pope John Paul II during a performance on Saturday Night Live. There was really a lot of criticism about that. Years later, we look at it differently, when indeed a lot of child abuse within the church came to light. In October 2021, 330,000 minor victims were reported. Sinéad's career unfortunately did not really survive.
2. The Dixie Chicks
This group also did not receive much appreciation for their protest. Fortunately, the tide seems to be turning now — finally — because they can be heard on Taylor Swift's album Lover, for example. In 2003, they were heavily canceled because they openly criticized President Bush and the war in Iraq. That criticism led to multiple death threats, thousands of American radio stations refusing to play their songs, and their fellow country artists openly disapproving of The Dixie Chicks. After about nineteen years, they finally seem to be back in the picture.
3. Janet Jackson
The reason why YouTube started (seriously), namely Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction during the performance with Justin Timberlake. You would think she really had nothing to do with it, but the internet thought differently at the time. In fact, she received a fine of $550,000 from the Federal Communications Commission. Of course, there was nothing wrong with Justin Timberlake's career.
4. Courtney Love
During an interview, she told a journalist that young actors absolutely should not go to Harvey Weinstein's hotel room when he suggested it, because he was not a trustworthy/good man. This was in 2005 and no one listened to Love. Instead, she received a huge amount of criticism and was labeled as a crazy person. Well... Now we know better.
5. Michael Moore
The documentary maker received an Oscar in 2003 for Bowling For Columbine and mentioned in his acceptance speech that he was against the war. ‘We live in a time where we send people to war for fictitious reasons. […] We are against the war, Mr. Bush.’ He was booed off the stage, was never nominated again, and people disapproved of his words. Side note: on the same evening, Roman Polanski received a standing ovation.
6. Every woman who became a victim of The Fappening and felt forced to publicly apologize for their private nude photos
Nothing more to add, right? Vanessa Hudgens, Jennifer Lawrence, Ariana Grande, Kate Upton, Avril Lavigne, Rihanna, Emma Watson, Selena Gomez… In total, more than 100 celebs were hacked and their private images were spread. What a nightmare.
