This list can of course become really gigantic and we can probably add to it significantly every month, but we are not going to do that. No, I’m giving this list a cheerful touch: a string of celebrities who went to rehab and overcame their addiction. Hooray. And yet there are a few celebs here that you might not have known went through a pretty dark period — some were also very young.

Robert Downey Jr.
When I was a member of Hitkrant, he was regularly featured due to his excessive partying and visits to a rehab clinic. Never thought he would turn his life around 180 degrees and not only become sober but also pick up an impressive career in Hollywood. And an extra plus: according to DeuxMoi, he is the only Hollywood star who is faithful to his partner. Although that does paint a pretty sad picture of the rest…

2. Drew Barrymore
At the age of thirteen, actress Drew Barrymore revealed that she was addicted. Her career started at the age of six when she got a role in E.T., and from that moment on, things quickly went downhill for the star. She started drinking, smoked weed at nine, and snorted cocaine at twelve. Intense. She went to rehab twice and has been completely sober since then.

3. Demi Lovato
This singer has always been open about her struggles with substances. According to her, she started using cocaine at seventeen and eventually ended up in the hospital with an overdose in 2018 — there were persistent rumors that she was using heroin at that time. After this overdose, she suffered three strokes and a heart attack and almost didn’t survive. Fortunately, she has been completely sober since that moment.

4. Elton John
If you’ve seen the movie Rocket Man, you already knew this, but before that film, I had no idea that Elton John was fond of alcohol and drugs. It wasn’t until he lost his good friend Ryan White in 1990 that he sought help in a rehab clinic.

5. Nicole Richie
This probably doesn’t surprise you at all if you also watched The Simple Life with former BFF Paris Hilton. Those two girls were uncontrollable, that was clear, but behind the scenes, it was much grimmer: Nicole Richie was quite addicted. At eighteen, she went to a rehab clinic for cocaine and when she was twenty, again for heroin use. Since she turned 21, she has been completely clean.
