Why we really don't like mushrooms

Say wine, snacks or haute cuisine and the gourmands at online food magazine FavorFlav know where to drink, how to eat it and what to cook. This time our cheffies serve you: why we really don't like mushrooms.

In the past, everything was better. Well, yes, that certainly doesn't apply to my parents regarding my eating habits. I was such a picky eater that my father had to hold my nose shut in my younger years so my mother could shove a spoonful of food in. I. Liked. Nothing. Except pizza. And pancakes. And hamburgers. Yes, I was really a terrible eater...

But I got my act together. Somewhere in my teenage years, a world opened up for me, the world called: healthy eating. Varied eating. Sometimes vegetarian eating. Well, in short: just normal eating. I still jokingly tell my mother that I only realized that later because she just didn't cook it well. She absolutely doesn't find that a funny joke (sorry mom!).

Nowadays, I consider myself a real kitchen princess and genuinely enjoy cooking little masterpieces. But there is one thing, one ingredient, that will never come into my food. The mushroom. DISGUSTING.

Wow, calm down. Why the hate?
That texture, people: that textúre. I don't even mind the taste that much: I can manage a smooth mushroom soup (but not enjoy it, to be honest), but put a piece of mushroom in my food and I'm done. Or well, done... I'll spend the next twenty minutes dissecting my entire dish to make sure one hundred percent that there's not a single piece to be found. And then my food is cold and I'm grumpy. This happens every time there's a mushroom in my food.

And what's so bad about that texture? No matter how you prepare it, it's just really inedible. Rubber. Disgustingly smooth. You think it might just be soft mush and then it suddenly has that bite. It looks a bit like a snail in color: it just looks disgusting. And it flops around when you take it out. And raw, it looks like you should have left it in the ground.

Anyway, I was often warned in the past that some mushrooms were poisonous. They can all be poisonous for me. Just leave them in the ground. I find them scary things. People who can genuinely serve a portobello as a main course and enjoy it: I don't trust you.
