What the Dutch man can learn from the Frenchman

Last week I wrote an ode to the always elegant Parisiennes, because there is no doubt that there is a lot to learn from the women in Paris. But is there also something to learn from French men? The answer is: absolutely, especially from the down-to-earth men from our own little country.
So make sure to read this article to all the handsome men around you, because this is what the Dutch man can learn from the typical Frenchman.
1. They are complimentary
My trip to Paris has been quite good for my ego, because the men here shower you with compliments. At first, it made me a bit irritable, but after a few days in the French city, you suddenly realize how little complimentary the Dutch man actually is. So lesson number one: never enough compliments. And no, it doesn't make us arrogant, just really happy.
2. They are gallant
A Frenchman will always hold the door open for you or stand up to let you sit in the metro. Call it old-fashioned, but I find this very attractive. And the bill? The men here always take care of that. Okay, I admit that this is not exactly feminist or progressive, but it's more about the gesture; the Frenchman loves to pamper you. Hopefully, Aletta Jacobs isn't turning in her grave and understands my point.
3. They take initiative
I can sometimes get so tired of all the depressing stories from my single friends. Dutch men seem to take so little initiative when it comes to dating. After endless back-and-forth messaging, you should be happy if an appointment actually happens. The Frenchman? He asks you out on the spot during the first meeting and then ensures a fantastic date, for which you don't have to do anything at all. Sounds good, right? I know this from my French ex-boyfriend.
4. They are well-dressed
You won't easily catch a Frenchman in high-water pants or an unpressed shirt. The men here, just like the Parisiennes, make an effort to always look good and well-groomed. Whether they are wearing a tailored suit or simple jeans, they always look like a million bucks. Oh, and those socks, Frenchmen always wear – attention to detail – beautiful socks. Small effort, great result.
