These terrible hair trends were extremely cool back in the day

As a little girl, I had a short, sassy haircut that I was absolutely not happy with. My hair only started to grow a bit around my tenth birthday, so before that, I walked around with a sad little tuft. Because I dreamed of long hair, my mother bought me a blonde fake braid, which was way too long in proportion to my small body. Of course, I was over the moon with this piece, and every day I proudly went to school with my hairpiece in. Well, it was a hit, within no time all the kids in class had one of those things.

Then I tried many other hair trends that really aren't worth looking at anymore. From waffles to colored streaks and low-lights: I've had them all. Undoubtedly, you all also flaunted these terrible trends that were once extremely hip.

Fake braids
You could just buy these at the drugstore and then attach them to your own little ponytail. Or you wore it as a headband, that was also possible. Often, you chose a variant that didn't quite match your own hair color. That didn't matter at all, because it was actually the intention that people saw it was fake.

Feathers
Clips with feathers were also all the rage back then. With a bit of luck, your hairdresser could even braid them in for you, so you could flaunt them 24/7. Besides feathers, it was also trendy to hang beads, shells, and rings on them. In short: the more you had in your hair, the better, it made it look a lot fuller. A real win-win.

Colored dreadlocks
As a successor to the feathers, the colored dreadlock appeared not long after. You really had to have someone else do this for you, and a lot of patience was required. With very thin colorful threads, your lock was completely twisted, and it was absolute hell to remove this after months. But hey, it was definitely worth it.

Glitter parting
Around December, when you went to the hairdresser for your Christmas hairstyle, you not only asked for a zigzag parting but also to accentuate that zigzag parting with lots of glitter. The hairdresser then went all out with her spray, and you could shine all month long with your festive parting. You washed your hair as little as possible, of course.

Extreme highlights or lowlights
This trend was very clear: blondes walked around with black streaks in their hair, and brunettes bleached their streaks. Inspired by Christina Aguilera, you couldn't do otherwise. I believe I burned all the photos from this period.

The angled lock
During the ‘emo’ phase, where you mainly wore black and put a lot of dramatic lyrics in your MSN name, there was also a very good chance you had an angled lock. That was just part of the skater-like look you wanted to achieve. Of course, role model Avril Lavigne led the way for us.

Waffles
Especially in middle school, the waffle iron was your best friend. I felt like my room was always blue when I used mine, but the result was of course stunning. Yes, I know that crimped hair is back in style, but I absolutely will not venture into this trend again. Those three hairs I have left, I want to cherish.

Perm
Not everyone is blessed with a beautiful head of curls, and that's why you simply chose to get a perm at the hairdresser. That this is really the worst thing you can do for your hairstyle, of course, wasn't mentioned. I bet everyone who has ever had permanent curls can attest to this by now. And what was the worst part? That a poodle often looked better than you.
