Netflix tip: Het Auschwitz Rapport

The Auschwitz report on Netflix

Since today, there is again a particularly impressive and beautiful film on Netflix. At least, that's what I assume. The trailer for The Auschwitz Report is really very good, and especially very intense. This is on my schedule for tonight, but I am so convinced that this will be a very solid film that I’m already tipping it now. This film is based on a true story (always a plus, in my opinion), which makes it even more impressive. And the way it is filmed; I was quite astonished by this trailer.

Initially, the intention was for this film to be shown in theaters, but that ultimately did not happen. Netflix didn't have to think long about it and immediately bought the rights, making it available on the streaming service soon.

The Auschwitz Report is the name, and it tells the story of Rudolf Vrba and Alfréd Wetzler, who ended up in the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1942. Once there, they are determined to survive, in fact: to escape the camp. Miraculously, they succeed in 1944. Bizarrely, only five Jews have managed to escape successfully, including these two men.

Once escaped, they decide to write down their experiences in detail to make people aware of the terrible things happening there. They hope to save more people in Auschwitz. They wrote this down in a report of 32 pages long, which would later become known as the Vrba-Wetzler report. This report is now considered one of the most important from World War II, but it was quite different back then. The Vrba-Wetzler report was the very first detailed account of the atrocities taking place in Auschwitz, and that was also the problem at the time: people did not believe Vrba and Wetzler. They could not imagine that it was really that terrible there and questioned their story. Moreover, they were accused of exaggerating their experiences.

So you can imagine that this film is really quite intense. Personally, I find everything about World War II intensely interesting and also very moving, but I predict that this film is not for those with a weak stomach. So here’s a disclaimer: this is not going to be a film for a cozy movie night, but I bet it will be one of the most impressive of this year.
