We are crazy about toasties and for weeks we have thrown all concerns about carbohydrates or fat overboard. Pre-corona, we occasionally thought in a shady corner of our brain about ‘healthy’, and ‘a little on a diet’ and so on – now it's bread, cheese, fat, meat, and beans that count (hello hot dog buns). And that's why: ten fantastic toasties!
These are our ten top toasties:
French Melt toastie with caramelized onion
So decadent with such an umami kick, simply delicious. Take your time and enjoy it.
Toastie Gruyère and red wine
Not childish either, this thick one with a red wine roux and our Swiss favorite...
Toastie Cheddar and jalapeño
Delicious, especially if you can find a really sharp Cheddar. Layer upon layer, so to speak, and no one says you can't dip it in a dollop of salsa from a jar.
Toastie sauerkraut, Munster cheese, and bacon
Really. Very. Good. Don't hesitate, just do it. And also melts nicely with some cheese on top.
Toastie chicken tandoori
A little trip to the East with this spicy naan toastie. Chicken, tandoori spices, cheese, and mango chutney; what are you waiting for? Go make it!
Vegan toastie with hummus and walnut pesto
Vegans can also satisfy their toastie cravings with this lovely pumpkin-based, plant-based variant.
Toastie cheese/grilled eggplant
Actually tasty with all grilled vegetables (editor's favorite too!), so first coat a few slices of eggplant with oil and put them on your grill! And if you're too lazy for that: Turkish shops, and often also supermarkets, sell those extremely handy jars of pre-grilled vegetables...
Toastie cumin cheese and pastrami
Also sooo delicious, this spicy toastie with dripping cheese and chewy, thick slices of pastrami. By the way, also not bad with another dollop of that sauerkraut!
And as a bonus, two sweet toasties. A little breather and put the cheese aside. Phew, you definitely deserve a dessert...
