The things you recognize when you are a daydreamer

girl looking dreamily around her

As a daydreamer, I often wake up with the question: ‘Are you even listening?’ Most of the time, I nod very seriously at that moment or say something that I hope connects to the story I just missed. The absolute worst thing people can do then is ask: ‘What did I say?’ Well, try to get yourself out of that one.

Do you also belong to team daydreamer? Then you undoubtedly recognize the situations below:

1. You have an ultra-short attention span
Even if you are doing something that makes you happy, that attention span can snap very abruptly at any moment. In other words: you have the concentration of a goldfish. For example, I have played almost every musical instrument at some point, but certainly not longer than two months. I started taking piano lessons with great enthusiasm during the last lockdown and now I can't read a note anymore. Recognizable?

2. You think in images
Daydreamers constantly think in images and have a rich imagination, which makes them incredibly creative beings. They also often understand things faster because they are so visually oriented. For example, think of a drawn manual; a daydreamer has that Ikea cabinet assembled in no time.

3. Daydreamers are stars in debating
You might not expect this from daydreamers because they easily have their heads somewhere else, but precisely because daydreamers think in images, they have already had certain conversations in their heads a million times. Expressing an argument? Daydreamers know exactly what they are going to say and will definitely talk you under the table.

4. You never finish anything
As a daydreamer, there is never an end to your to-do list because you simply drift off with every task. Even sending a simple email takes me days. And when you finally try to complete that one task, you've already thought of a new task for the list. What do you mean exhausting?

5. You find it hard to live in the here and now
That self-created world in your head is much more beautiful than the ‘real’ world, making it sometimes difficult for daydreamers to live in the here and now. I often daydream about the thought of living far away in the middle of nature, with all kinds of wild animals like some sort of Jane in the jungle. Who knows, that might happen someday, but for now, I just have to enjoy life here in the city. It's not that bad after all.
