Good news: singing in the shower is good for your health

woman singing in the shower

No idea when I exactly started, but as long as I can remember, I shower with music on. Otherwise, I just get bored to death. Before I step in, I always make a little playlist for myself. That always goes in different phases, although my whole life I think is one big Taylor Swift phase, so she is always at least once in there. Furthermore, I have been singing along to Thijs Boontjes full blast in the shower for a few weeks now. And dancing along, by the way. It almost sounds like a workout.

But hey, that's not a bad thing at all, because singing in the shower turns out to be really good for your health. And yes, even if you (like me) can hardly hit a note. Singing lowers the amount of cortisol in your blood. Don't know that substance? Well, it's the substance that causes stress, so the less, the better. And the less stress you have, the healthier your heart is.

But aside from less cortisol, regularly singing also ensures that your brain produces endorphins and oxytocin, and those are substances that make you feel good and happy. With a good singing session, you can even achieve a kind of runner's high, and that without running hard. Moreover, this research showed that regularly singing for a longer time leads to a longer life expectancy and teaches you how to deal with chronic pain if you have to live with it.

Are you afraid your neighbors will hear you? No need. And suppose you hear your neighbor let out a good note in the shower: just sing along from now on. Because that's another advantage that comes into play: people who sing together have a heart rate that is the same. This can also be achieved by meditating, but... This is way more fun.
