Plastic spoons are now out of the question (in fact, they have been banned since July 2021) because: bad for the environment. I get that, but I really think the alternative, a wooden spoon, is just not good at all. It doesn't do the taste of the ice cream any good. You can safely say: they ruin the taste quite a bit.

Fortunately, I'm not the only ice cream lover who thinks this way, but an ideal alternative was still missing. Until now, because ice cream parlor Van Swoll in Apeldoorn claims to have found the perfect solution.

…says ice cream parlor owner Klaas Brasjen. Well Klaas, I completely agree with you. The wooden spoon was quickly dismissed at Van Swoll — rightly so. They initially tried a test with pressed cardboard, but that didn't go smoothly either: due to the moisture from the ice cream, it became very limp. On to the next idea, then.

This cardboard spoon is still an option (they have bought quite a few of them), but the current hit with them is the stainless steel spoon. Brilliant, right? ‘The suitable alternative was more obvious than initially thought. Because how do people eat a bowl of ice cream at home? Just with a sturdy stainless steel teaspoon.’ Well, you are absolutely right. And after use, you can throw this spoon in a bin and they will clean it again at Van Swoll.

Of course, occasionally a spoon disappears, but that's not a drama at all. Seriously, this is a really good plan. Incredibly obvious and yet I haven't seen it at any ice cream parlor. I predict this will be the trend of this summer.
